The article, titled Independent practice: Both nurse practitioners and physicians should be outraged, ran January 5, 2018 and contained numerous erroneous statements. AANP, NAPNAP and NONPF all contributed to a response that was shared with and posted on AANP’s website.

    An incident occurred on a recent American Airlines flight that necessitated the crew requesting assistance for a passenger in distress. When a nurse practitioner responded immediately, she was not allowed to provide the services needed. Please read AANP’s letter from Joyce Knestrick to American Airlines Chairman and CEO Doug Parker

    The American Medical Association (AMA) took steps at its recent meeting to call for the creation of a national strategy to oppose legislative efforts that grant independent practice to non-physician practitioners through model legislation and national and state level campaigns. While these tactics are not new, the AMA’s ongoing physician protectionist resolutions are hurting patients and negatively impacting the health of our nation.

    The AMA resolved to:

    ·    Effectively oppose the continual, nationwide efforts to grant independent practice (e.g., APRN Consensus Model, APRN Compact) to non-physician practitioners;

    ·    Effectively educate the public, legislators, regulators, and healthcare administrators; and

    ·    Effectively oppose state and national level legislative efforts aimed at inappropriate scope of practice expansion of non-physician healthcare practitioners; with report back at the 2018 Annual Meeting.

    The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) has issued a statement in response to the AMA’s resolution. Read the statement on our website. We will continue to fight for our patients and their right to high quality care delivered by the provider of their choice.
